Our shows have thousands of fascinating beads you won't find in our catalog or even our Web site. We rent a banquet room in your area, then fill it with table upon table of sale-priced beads: gemstone, turquoise, sterling, glass, pearl, trade and much more! We'll also bring samples of many regular-stock items and help you place an order for anything in our catalog; shipping is free for all orders over $100 placed from a show.

Be sure to check our Bead Show page over the next few weeks as we post the names of the hotel/hall where the new shows will take place and directions to get there. All available information on these shows and the full schedule for the rest of our shows are listed on the Bead Show page.

Pearls Added to Gemstone Beads Index
Fresh-water pearls from Rings & Things It's said that if diamonds are a girl's best friend, then pearls must be her favorite sister. When we introduced our giant Gemstone Beads Index this spring, we quickly began receiving feedback. Many of you called or wrote to tell us it was fun to read, surprisingly honest, just what you'd been searching for to share with customers…. the only disappointment we heard was that pearls were not included. We initially had left out this ancient jewel because some experts do not consider it a gemstone and it does not have a gemstone stock number in our system. However, we realized it fits many definitions of "gemstone," is frequently strung with gemstones, and many gemstone books and Web sites include it. So we're proud to announce pearls have been added as our longest entry yet in the gem index! Most extensive are its care instructions, creation background and exciting historical tales. Dive into our index and discover a true pearl.

Artist Profiles: Kurt Madison & Margot Casstevens
Some guy with the screen name "Metalman" runs the Art Clay™ Silver discussion forum on Rings & Things' Web site. He seems to know a lot, but where did he learn it all? And has he just messed around awhile with metal clays, or does he possess real talent? Many of you have expressed curiosity over Metalman, aka Kurt Madison. Others are dying to know more about Margot Casstevens, the artist behind many of the breathtaking pieces in our Art Clay Silver ads. We've put together a profile article, complete with pictures, on each of these innovative artists. This pair, who happen to be married and co-own a studio, create thought-provoking, uniquely inspired jewelry pieces. While both want their creations to be moving, their styles and philosophies are quite different. Read their fascinating life stories and get a fresh perspective on art:

The Red Hat is Red Hot
Red Hat Lady wearing a charm from Rings & Things Clashing was never so much fun! Our new line of vividly red and purple charms is inspired by the poem "Warning," by Jenny Joseph, which begins: "When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple with a red hat which doesn't go and doesn't suit me." The red hat has become a symbol of feminine whimsy, irreverence and enjoying life. The red-hat theme charms include five enameled red hat styles, a purple umbrella, a purple handbag, a red purse and a red high-heel shoe. Uncolored, plain metal versions are also available.

The 3-D dog and cat have a hanging bone and mouse, respectively. The flat, inspirational cloud charms read "Sweet Dreams" (moon and star dangle); "Dream Lover" (heart dangle); and "Live Your Dream" (star dangle).

Color-Changing Beads a Surprise… Even for Us!
Color-changing alexandrite beads from Rings & Things
Like an old friend, beads you've carried for years can have a hidden talent that suddenly shows itself. This was the case with our Chinese and Czech glass beads. We always knew that color -262, alexandrite, was a very pale purplish blue. Every time we looked at them under the fluorescent lights of our warehouse, they were generally the same shade. And then, one day last month, an employee held up a strand to the sunlight, and was startled to discover the beads had become solid purple. What's more, they became an even darker purple under halogen and incandescent light. We contacted our vendors and were told, yes, alexandrite had always been color-changing. We are now happy to spread the word: Our alexandrite beads have an extra feature! Click here to see our Czech and Chinese glass beads in a new light

As a nice coincidence of timing, we've just added even more color-changing Swarovski® crystal beads. The newest color, cantaloupe, sports colors that match the layers of an actual cantaloupe! Its hue appears bright green (outer rind), grayish crystal (inner rind) or pinkish peach (fruit), depending on the light source. We carry this color in 4mm and 6mm rondelle/bicone beads and in 4mm, 6mm and 8mm cubes. Also, as you might have noticed in our 2004 Summer Supplement, we recently added 4mm Swarovski rondelle/bicone beads in alexandrite (unlike our glass beads, we did already know Swarovksi's alexandrite was color-changing!).

Jewelry Industry Pushes for Responsible Mining
Lake Pend Oreille, Idaho Lake Pend Oreille in
Sandpoint, Idaho, could
become polluted by a
planned metal mine in
nearby Montana.
Protecting and preserving the environment has always been a major Rings & Things mission. For this reason, we are in full support of a new effort under way – stopping pollution from precious-metal mines. In an effort led by Tiffany & Co., the jewelry industry has begun seeking raw materials only from socially and environmentally friendly mines, according to the Jewelers of America. A recent report by environmental groups showed mining to be the top toxic polluter in the United States, responsible for 96 percent of arsenic emissions and 76 percent of lead emissions.

The Dirty Metals campaign, as the effort has been dubbed, has been strongly focused on pollution problems in Rings & Things' neck of the woods: the Pacific Northwest. In March, Tiffany's called for the U.S. government to block construction of a copper-and-silver mine environmentalists fear would dump millions of gallons of wastewater per day into the Clark Fork River and subsequently Lake Pend Orielle, both in the Idaho Panhandle. Threatened wildlife species in the area, including bull trout and grizzly bears, are a great concern.

The company that would run the mine has a different story. Frank Duval, CEO of Spokane's Revett Silver Company, told USA Today there was no comparison between old, polluting mining practices and the modern methods his firm will use in Rock Creek Mine. He said the mine's wastewater will be cleaned before entering the Clark Fork River, and that the company will take precautions to protect the bear population. U.S. Agriculture Undersecretary Mark Rey also has said the proposed mine would follow strict controls to protect wildlife and waterways.

Conservationists additionally have attacked gold mining, which they call America's dirtiest industry. While the U.S. gold jewelry market is worth about $16 billion annually, they say one gold ring generates 20 tons of mine waste. The National Mining Association in Washington, D.C., has spoken out in defense. NMA President Jack Gerard told the Associated Press, "The U.S. gold mining industry is the world's most advanced, using modern technology and stringent environmental safeguards. Scare tactics, outdated and incorrect information should not be used to falsely characterize the fine efforts of these hardworking and knowledgeable men and women."

The feud between environmentalists and miners likely won't end in the foreseeable future. Luckily, some newer metal items are actually engineered to be enviro-friendly, allowing them to bypass this squabble. Art Clay Silver™ is a great example, as it contains recycled, pure silver. The silver is recovered from exposed photographic and diagnostic film in Japan! Rings & Things is proud to be a supplier of recycled products like ACS, and hopes the jewelry supplies industry continues endeavoring to keep the earth clean.
