Bali silver jewelry is typically handmade, as in this photo taken in Celuk, Bali. To produce these earrings, one person makes the blanks, another person makes the granulations (dots) and a third person (pictured here) painstakingly glues each dot onto the blank. The glue used is made from poisonous coral(huayruro) seeds, seen in the blue tub. The seed coat is removed and the inner seed crushed and mixed with a crystalline chemical we could not identify. This glue is used to adhere the silver granules to the blank (base). Once the item is covered with granules, it returns to a silversmith's bench where it is heated with a kerosene-fueled torch to fuse the granules to the silver base. No solder is used for this step, and soaring fuel costs combine with rising silver markets to increase the price of hand made Bali silver. This laborious process results in a distinctive and popular jewelry style! | ||
