R&T Wins Governor's Commute Award!

Selina Shehan, R&T graphic designer and employee transportation coordinator, accepts the Outstanding Achievement award for Rings & Things. Rings & Things was honored with one of only two awards for "Outstanding Achievement by a Voluntary Employer" at Washington State's Public Transportation Conference this September. Despite being a volunteer, R&T's percentage of participation is much higher than that of many companies required to participate in the Commute Trip Reduction (CTR) program. A whopping 93% of Rings & Things employees actively reduce drive-alone commuting by walking, riding a bicycle, taking the bus, carpooling to work, or working compressed (4-day) workweeks.

According to the Washington State Department Of Transportation, "award-winning employers are leaders in saving space on the road and reducing impacts from gasoline consumption. They serve as role models for the more than 800 employers in the state who implement CTR programs." According to Washington governor Christine Gregoire, "these best practices are shining examples to both public and private sector organizations ..."

In all, 25 companies won awards at the conference. A big thank you goes out to all R&T employees who use commute alternatives! Special thanks go to co-owner Russ Nobbs for his personal support of commute alternatives (he can sometimes be seen riding his recumbent bike to the warehouse) and to the creative efforts and enthusiasm of R&T's graphic designer Selina Shehan for her outstanding double duty as Employee Transportation Coordinator (ETC). Russ says of the award, "We're really proud of this. It reflects the commitment of the company and our employees to tread lightly on the earth."

Stay Hot this Winter: Seasonal Trends

Click here for a large choice of trendy hammered components! For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, days are shrinking and temperatures are starting to cool. At the same time, calendars are filling up with harvest festivals and holiday preparations. Whether you're restocking your shop, making jewelry for yourself or making items to sell at autumn festivals and holiday shows, you'll want to know about these hot trends.

Pearls are hot this season too. We especially recommend going for earthy and 'metallic' hues. In the world of metals, hammered components are all the rage, and R&T can supply all your needs! We have a wide variety of hammered connectors & links, hammered charms & pendants, hammered clasps and hammered chain. Colorwise, copper and gunmetal continue to be hot. Best yet, all of the above parts work great for trendy Steampunk and Neo-Victorian designs. (For more on Steampunk, see our August 2008 Steampunk article.)

Traditionally autumnal colors extend to winter and spring for 2009. Use links to the left to sample our selection. For color choices, try pairing dark rich metal hues with warm chocolate freshwater pearls and other earthy pearl tones, including bronze freshwater pearls and Swarovksi® deep brown, antique brass, copper and bright gold faux pearls. Additional earthy colors being seen in the shops and magazines include mustard (mookaite and crazy lace agate are good gemstone options) and burnt pumpkin orange (hyacinth and red topaz beads provide the burnt pumpkin look). Generally speaking, hues traditionally associated with autumn will remain in vogue through winter and spring for 2009.

For an alternative to earthy colors, go for a contrast of classic black with luxe hippie brights! Links to the right will show you the way. If you prefer a wider palette, try pairing the blackest blacks with a mix of bright colors to help overcome the winter blues! For blackest blacks, try our black onyx gemstones, jet Swarovski crystal and black Czech glass. For the brightest of the bright, go for shimmering foil-lined glass, fiber optic beads, resin beads and miracle beads. Along with these rainbow brights, peace signs are coming back in style as part of the arty "luxe hippie" look. Try our colorful handmade ceramic peace sign beads or our metal peace-sign charms.

Business Emergency Preparedness & Relief

Check out CERF today, whether you're looking for help, looking to help others or just looking to prepare your own business for the future. As this year's hurricane and tornado seasons recede, it's a good time to remember a great organization for professional craftspeople in need: the Craft Emergency Relief Fund (CERF). The non-profit was founded in 1985, and its goal is to build on the grassroots tradition of "passing the hat" for fellow artisans in dire straits. Since its inception, CERF has helped "hundreds of professional craft artists with over $1 million in financial assistance, along with approximately $250,000 in donated services such as booth fee waivers, equipment, and supplies."

In addition to material relief, CERF also provides a venue for emotional support and networking. Its Disaster Forums – previously a temporary feature offered after major catastrophes like Hurricane Katrina – is now a permanent section of its website. The goal of the Forums is to "share experiences and ideas about disaster preparedness and recovery, and to offer assistance and pass along news during and after emergencies."

One arena in which CERF has recently redoubled its efforts is emergency preparedness. Their website now offers training, information and access to resources for several prevention strategies, including:

  • occupational safety practices (to prevent work-related injuries)
  • safeguarding and backing up computer files, documents and photographs (to prevent vital information loss in the face of a disaster)
  • health, property and liability insurance (to financially protect yourself against disaster)

Rings & Things regularly donates to CERF, and co-owner Russ Nobbs reiterates that CERF is a good place to send a donation when times are good. Join the long list of jewelers, beaders, glassworkers and others in the craft industry who support this craft-specific charity. Even if you can't give at this time, we highly recommend you look at what CERF has to offer. It is the only craft emergency support group of its kind in the United States. Those of you personally affected by Hurricane Ike and Hurricane Gustav will find especially timely information on the CERF website. But regardless of whether you're looking for help, looking to help others or just looking to prepare your own business for the future, CERF will help you organize your efforts.
